Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine reopens during Nicole

The bridge was closed due to flooding early Thursday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As Tropical Storm Nicole continues to bring rain and wind to the First Coast, the streets of St. Augustine are flooded. But the Bridge of Lions is now back open, a sign that things may be improving for the better.

The Bridge of Lions was closed as of 8:16 a.m., according to the St. Augustine Police Department.

The city of St. Augustine was "flooding at a rapid pace" Thursday morning, according to a tweet from SAPD.

The bridge was closed because a sailboat was stuck under the bridge.

The owner of the sailboat spoke with First Coast News. He said that he was still bouncing back from Hurricane Ian when the boat broke free of its anchor and the chain holding it down snapped loose.

"The part that's frustrating is how much time and money and effort I put into that thing," he said. He had spent a year and a half cleaning up the boat to make it livable after buying it, and he lives on the boat.
