Florida Disaster Fund activated for Hurricane Ian | How to contribute

TAMPA, Fla. — The Florida Disaster Fund has been activated as Hurricane Ian is set to sweep across the set.

Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis announced the activation Wednesday, ahead of Ian's anticipated landfall.

The fund is described by the state as a "private fund established to provide financial assistance to our communities as they respond to and recover from times of emergency or disaster."

“The Governor and I are thankful for the graciousness of those looking to assist Florida’s communities in their time of need,” DeSantis said in a statement. “I am pleased to announce that Volunteer Florida has activated the Florida Disaster Fund so that people can donate directly to those affected by Hurricane Ian. We greatly appreciate the kindness and generosity of organizations and individuals from across the country looking to support Floridians, thank you.”

How to contribute to the Florida Disaster Fund

There are different ways you can donate to the fund.

  • One is to visit the Volunteer Florida website and contribute at volunteerflorida.org/donatefdf.
  • You can make a check out to "Volunteer Florida Foundation." Include "Florida Disaster Fund" in the memo line, and mail it to Volunteer Florida Foundation at 1545 Raymond Diehl Road, Ste. 250, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
  • You can text DISASTER to 20222.

The fund notes that up to 3% and no more than $30,000 from any single donation may be drawn on to cover the organization's administrative costs. All the rest go to response and recovery activities.
