Jacksonville post office offers passport fair Saturday

The availability will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city’s main post office located at 1100 Kings Road.

For people who can’t get to the post office during normal hours to file for the credentials to travel abroad, the U.S. Postal Service will be having a passport fair Saturday in Jacksonville.

Appointments are not required, but residents are encouraged to show up early. Applicants will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. Passport photo services will be available for those needing a new or updated passport photo.

The availability will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city’s main post office at 1100 Kings Road.

Processing typically takes six to eight weeks, or applicants can choose an expedited service for a fee.

Here’s what required to obtain a passport:

  • Bring proof of American citizenship. This must be either a certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state, naturalization certificate (a hospital-issued birth certificate alone is not acceptable), consular report of birth abroad, certificate of citizenship or a previous U.S. passport.
  • Bring a clear photocopy of the applicant’s proof of American citizenship.
  • Bring proof of identity. This must be either a previous U.S. passport or passport card, certificate of naturalization with an identifiable photo attached, certificate of citizenship with identifiable photo attached, valid driver’s license, official U.S. military or military dependent identification card, government employee identification card or current valid foreign passport.
  • Bring a clear photocopy of the applicant’s proof of identity.
  • Bring or have done a color passport photograph (2-by-2 inches in size), which the Post Office Passport Office can provide for $15.
  • To save time, customers may download a passport application at usps.com/passport to complete beforehand.
  • All applicants must appear in person (including minors).
  • Minors younger than 16 must appear with both parents. If one parent is not available, a notarized authorization from the absent parent is required.

The cost is $110 for adults and must be paid by a check or money order made payable to the U.S. State Department and a $35 execution fee made payable to Postmaster. Fees for children are $80 and $35. The cost to expedite processing at the Department of State is $60.

People can call (800) ASK-USPS or go to the Postal Service’s website usps.com to get the location of other nearby passport post offices and their passport customer service hours. Passport customers may also check the U.S. State Department’s website at travel.state.gov to obtain additional information.
