TOLL UPDATE: Tolls will not go into effect this month on First Coast as previously planned

The tolls were anticipated to start on Jan. 12, but FDOT has confirmed on Tuesday that this will no longer be the case.

Holy Toll-y! Commuters can enjoy a toll-free ride on the First Coast Expressway for a little bit longer, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

In December, FDOT announced that tolls were coming to the First Coast region on the newly constructed State Road 23, also known as the First Coast Expressway. The tolls were anticipated to start on Jan. 12, but FDOT has confirmed on Tuesday that this will no longer be the case.

"We anticipate toll collection to start within the next several months, although a specific date has not yet been set," said Sara Pleasants, Public Information Officer with FDOT. "The project contractor is still making a few adjustments to drainage and ramps and completing punch list items necessary for project completion."

Despite the delayed tolls, FDOT is encouraging drivers who use such roads to acquire a SunPass transponder device as soon as possible.
