Homicide detectives investigate shooting by Clara White Mission, police say

The community liaison at the Clara White Mission says the person involved was not their client and they have ensured everyone at the mission is safe.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Monday on North Broad Street beside the Clara White Mission in downtown Jacksonville.

Upon officers' arrival, they said an adult man believed to be in his late-30s or early 40s, was found with multiple gunshot wounds. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department took the man to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Sgt. Highfill with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the shooting may have stemmed from a prior dispute they received a call about, where an individual threw rocks at a car.

Police blocked off North Broad Street between Beaver and Ashley streets. Michelle Maule, community liaison with the Clara White Mission, said the person involved was not their client and they have ensured everyone at the mission is safe.

Maule says she got a call about the police activity at about 8:52 a.m. She said because it's Memorial Day, the mission was not feeding people who are homeless, but staff comes in to feed residents and the situation happened during breakfast. Maule says the mission has surveillance cameras. Police are working to obtain surveillance footage.

"We did just want to reassure, our volunteers are fine," Maule said. "We do keep the property secure so that volunteers who come or anybody that partners with us, feel secure and safe when they're here with us."

The sheriff's office is asking for any help from anyone with information regarding this incident, to please contact JSO at the non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-455-TIPS.
