Jacksonville man dead after head-on crash on I-295

Troopers say a driver of a Grand Cherokee crossed over the express lane dividers and collided into oncoming traffic.

A man is dead after a head-on crash on Interstate 295 in Bartram Park Sunday evening.

The Florida Highway Patrol says that Thomas Clarke, 34, died after he lost control of his Grand Cherokee around 9:30 p.m.

Troopers say Clarke crossed over the express lane dividers and collided into oncoming traffic just south of Old St. Augustine Road and hit a Chevrolet Camaro head-on. The Camaro collided with the concrete wall. Clarke came to final rest within the express lanes and the inside shoulder.

Clarke was pronounced dead at Orange Park Medical Center and the driver of the Camaro was transported to Baptist Health South where they were later released.

The lanes of I-295 northbound were closed for several hours while the crash was investigated. Those lanes are now open.
