AAA: Drop in gas prices slows but continued decline is good for holiday travel

More than 5.4 million Floridians are expected to hit the road for the holiday season.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — (The video above is from a previous story.)

Florida gasoline prices dipped more than 3 cents last week, a response industry experts say is connected to the continued decline of crude oil prices.

The average price of a gallon of gas in the Sunshine State landed at $3.23 Sunday, according to AAA-The Auto Club Group's weekly briefing.

That’s down 12 cents since Thanksgiving. Before that, motorists were paying the highest prices of the year — $3.36 a gallon.

The decline of oil prices slowed since a double-digit dip just after Thanksgiving, dropping by just 1% in the last week.

But the drop in prices is good news as more than 5.4 million Floridians hit the road for the holiday season.

"Holiday travelers are getting the gift of falling prices at the pump, though these prices surely aren't falling as fast as many would like," AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said in his weekly briefing.

"Travelers are poised to pay about a dollar per gallon more than they did last year. Even still, after many decided to stay home and play it safe last year, it appears that higher gas prices will not be a big deterrent."
