Road reopened after deadly multi-vehicle crash on I-295 in Duval County

The crash initially involved a a sedan traveling the wrong way on I-295, which hit another car head-on.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person is dead and two others are injured after a multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler on I-295 early Saturday morning.

A Hyundai sedan driven by a 22-year-old Texas woman was traveling the wrong way in the left southbound lane of I-295 from Beach Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Meanwhile, a BMW sedan driven by a 23-year-old Jacksonville man and an 18-wheeler driven by a 48-year-old Hastings man were both driving south on I-295 toward Beach Boulevard.

At about 3:11 a.m., the Hyundai collided head-on with the BMW, causing the BMW to rotate and hit a guardrail. The BMW continued into the right lane where it was hit by the oncoming 18-wheeler. Both the BMW and 18-wheeler traveled down an embankment, which caused the truck to overturn, the FHP said.

The driver of the BMW died in the crash. The drivers of the Hyundai and the 18-wheeler both were seriously injured in the crash, according to the FHP.

Florida Highway Patrol did not say why the Hyundai may have been traveling the wrong way.

The crash caused the southbound lanes of I-295 at Atlantic Boulevard to be shut down for several hours. The scene was finally cleared Saturday evening just before 8 p.m.
