JACKSONVILLE, Fla — One person died in a traffic crash in the Crystal Springs neighborhood after the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the victim was driving recklessly and almost struck a pedestrian.
JSO said the crash happened on Chaffee Road South and I-10. JSO said just before 6:30 p.m., members of the Citywide Task Force were patrolling in the Lem Turner Road and Interstate-95 area when officers spotted a vehicle driving erratically.
JSO said the vehicle was driving recklessly through a parking lot and almost struck someone. Officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver failed to stop and fled south on I-95. Officers continued attempts to stop the vehicle as it continued westbound on I-10.
The sheriff's office said the vehicle continues west on I-10 and was seen driving in the emergency vehicle lane at a high rate of speed. JSO said the driver eventually lost control of the vehicle in the area of I-10 and Chaffee Road, left the roadway and struck a utility pole.
Officers pulled the driver from the vehicle, according to the sheriff's office. The driver was rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead, JSO said.
