Two teens have been identified as the people killed in a deadly wreck on U.S. 17 in Yulee Wednesday night.

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. - Two teens have been identified as the victims killed in a deadly wreck on U.S. 17 in Yulee Wednesday night.

Troopers report the accident happened just after 7:00 p.m. in Nassau County.

The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the two people killed as 16-year-old Kay Stanley Deraway IV and 15-year-old Travis Lighthall.

According to a release from FHP, the driver of a blue Nissan Sentra was traveling south when, for unknown reasons, the car veered into the right shoulder. The driver,Deraway, then overcorrected and came across the roadway, according to the report.

The passenger side of the car was then hit by the front of a Kia Soul traveling the opposite direction. Both the teens were pronounced dead the scene.

The driver of the Kia was taken to UF Health with serious injuries.

FHP said they don't know what caused the teens' car to swerve out of control. Right now, they don't believe alcohol was a factor, but they said they are still investigating.

Tyler Mitchell had known Deraway for a few years. Deraway was a great kid who got great grades, Mitchell said.

"He had a great family, a great, great family that took care of raising him how he should have been raised. That kid had a bright future ahead of him, so I mean this is a horrible thing that happened to him," said Mitchell.

The teens attended school at Oceanway Middle School and First Coast High School. A Duval County schools spokesperson said the district is deeply saddened by the news and that grief counselors and social workers will be at both schools Thursday.

Family and friends set up a GoFundMe page to help donate to both Deraway and Lighthall's funeral.
