1 minor killed in Northside crash where 2 vehicles collided in 'No Passing' zone

The front ends of the two vehicles collided, causing one of the cars to flip over -- killing one occupant.

A person under 18 years old died Sunday after the vehicle they were in flipped during a crash that occurred on the Northside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO said the crash happened in the 6500 block of Norwood Avenue at around 3 p.m.

The crash happened when one vehicle tried to pass another in a "No Passing" zone, police said. The front ends of the two vehicles collided, causing one of the cars to flip over -- killing one occupant.

JSO has not disclosed the age or identity of the deceased victim but said the victim was a juvenile.

Another victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Three more were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four blocks are blocked off, two in both directions from 6500 Norwood Avenue, as police investigate the scene.

A neighbor, Courtney Driggars, told First Coast News she heard a loud "boom" at the time of the crash.

"I heard a crash, and then I heard people screaming, so I came running," she said. "And once we got to the scene, they wouldn't let us in. They wouldn't let us near the scene."

Driggars and neighbor Mary Dennis said the scene was scary, but not shocking.

"This is a residential area, as you can see, and it's mostly quiet, and the speed limit is 25, 30," Dennis said. "Sometimes I have to look at the speed limit because they go so fast."

"Me, personally, I have been in my car and if I hadn't been watching, if I hadn't been paying attention, I would've gotten in several different collisions," Dennis said.

She is afraid the crash may repeat itself if people don't drive more carefully.

"I’m fearful that some child may walk out running behind a ball and a car or a driver may not be paying attention, and not realizing this is a residential area..." she said. "Children can dash out in front of a car at any given time if they’re not paying attention ... and I’m so afraid that that may happen one day."

"The child will not stand a chance because that’s just how fast these people are going in this area. It doesn’t make any sense," Dennis said.

Neighbors said they'll pray for those involved, and hope the crash is a wake-up call for drivers in the area.

"I just pray for the family that they would keep them strong because I just hate it," Dennis said. "And I hate to say it, but sometimes things like this have to happen in order for a change to come."
