A journalism professor at the University of Florida is offering students a chance to free fall into Tom Petty’s discography with a 1-credit course on his life and career.
UF journalism professor Clay Calvert will be teaching “Petty: The Biography” in the fall at UF, citing the rock legend’s recent death as a reason for starting the class, according to The Gainesville Sun.
Calvert, who typically teaches mass communication law classes, told the Gainesville newspaper the class will host 15 students, who will then get the opportunity to analyze Tom Petty song lyrics and style of music.
Students also will get a chance to learn about Petty’s personal life, including his drug use and impact on Gainesville, the Gainesville newspaper said.
Petty died Oct. 2 in California from cardiac arrest caused by an accidental drug overdose, according to previous reports from USA Today.
The Gainesville rocker was known for numerous hit songs, including “Free Fallin’,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Don’t’ Come Around Here No More” and “American Girl.
