On Your Side: Concerns over ice maker serving more than ice

Berg's 5-year-old GE refrigerator (Model# GSH22JGDDWW) was dispensing ice and hard clear plastic pieces together.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Harry Berg met me at Georgie's Diner in St. Augustine with his ice maker in hand.

"I just want somebody not to get hurt," he said.

Berg wanted to complain about foreign objects from his ice maker getting into his glass of water.

How he discovered them is still fresh in his mind.

"I got a glass of water with ice and went to bed," he said. "The next morning I got up and there was still ice in my glass and I said, 'how did that happen.'"

It was not ice. It was a piece of clear hard plastic from his ice dispenser. The plastic auger was broken and he did not know.

"It broke and the pieces were in with the ice," said Berg. "This has happened to me at least twice."

Berg's 5-year-old GE refrigerator (Model# GSH22JGDDWW)  was dispensing ice and hard clear plastic pieces together.

"I called up GE and they sent me a new ice bucket," he said.

It may seem like an isolated problem, but it is not.

On Your Side checked ConsumerAffairs.Com and they've received more than 25 complaints on the matter. Those complaints were connected to another GE ice maker (Model # WR30X10061).

A spokesperson with the Consumer Product Safety Commission told On Your Side:

"I just did (search) and do not see any reports or recalls for this particular model. There were a couple of incident reports on other GE or General Electric icemakers. CPSC would like to hear about this consumer’s incident with their icemaker."

Berg said he's not trying to start a problem; he is reporting a potential problem and wants the CPSC to investigate it.

"I really wish somebody would do something," he said.

He filed his report with the CPSC and now he awaits the outcome.

On Your Side contacted GE and a spokesperson said they're looking into the issue.

What do you do?

Check your ice maker. If the auger is made of plastic examine its condition and if you're concerned contact the manufacturer.
