GLYNN COUNTY, Fla. -- A 6-year-child is being treated in Savannah for a gunshot wound after his father fatally shot his wife and himself, Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said.

Glynn County police responded at 1 a.m. on Sunday to a shooting at Westminster Apartments off U.S. 17 north of Brunswick, Doering said.

The preliminary investigation shows 24-year-old Jesus Diaz had shot his wife, 21-year-old Emiko Diaz, their 6-year-old child, and then himself, Doering said.

The child survived the gunshot wound and was flown to the trauma center at Memorial Health, according to Doering. She is in critical condition, Doering said.

Doering declined to release any identities until the next of kin are notified.

Katherine, who lives at Westminster Apartment homes, said she cannot believe this happened at her normally quiet apartment complex.

"It's sad that somebody had to go and kill someone and attempt to kill his daughter then kill himself. It's a waste," said Katherine.

James Sheppard lives two doors down from the apartment where the shooting occurred.

"I'm shocked just like everybody else is, especially them, nobody would have thought it," said Sheppard.

Sheppard says the parents were a nice couple and that the girl loved them. He said the girl is very well behaved.

Neighbors' thoughts now turn to her wellbeing.

"I hope to God that the little girl can heal, she survives, the family heals, and it not ever happen again out here," said Katherine.

Department detectives are continuing to investigate, and anyone with information in the shooting is asked to call (912) 554-3645.
