City of Jacksonville awarded $232k grant to help homeless veterans

Last year, more than 90 veterans were enrolled in the program. Seventy-eight of them were placed into employment with an average hourly wage of $12.32.

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded the City of Jacksonville's Military Affairs and Veterans Department with a nearly $232,000 grant on Friday to help support homeless veterans and lead them on the path toward employment.

The grant, which totaled to $231,750, will help the Homeless Veteran's Reintegration Program (HVRP). The program provides homeless veterans with training services needed to re-enter the workforce, such as career counseling, resume preparation services and support services like attaining interview clothing and work tools.

“Jacksonville is a proud military town that takes seriously our commitment to the men and women who have served and sacrificed so much on behalf of our nation,” said Mayor Lenny Curry. “No veteran should be forced to spend a night on the streets of a nation they have fought to defend. I am proud of the hard work that our Military Affairs and Veterans Department and Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program accomplish in support of our veterans.”

Last year, more than 90 veterans were enrolled in the program. Seventy-eight of them were placed into employment with an average hourly wage of $12.32, according to the City.

The City also said 98 percent of those enrolled in the program also received vocational training, which helped 96 percent of their enrollment achieve employment.

HVRP also provides homeless veterans assistance in finding temporary, transitional or permanent housing, as well as medical treatment and transportation services.

This year marks the 12th year that the City of Jacksonville was awarded the grant.
