The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking for a bigger budget but not to put more officers out on the streets.
Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams is asking for $445 million in next year’s budget, more than any of the previous three years.
It won’t fund more officers, but it would invest in technology.
- $556,000 to fund more body cameras
- $287,258 to staff the real-time crime center
- $171,000 to replace more than 200 desktop computers
- $686,725 to replace UPS, network equipment and servers
- $3.5 million to fund a new RMS system
Reactions to the proposed budget are mixed.
"People getting shot and killed,” Janerica Hall said. "I feel like if we got more officers, a lot of lives could be saved."
"We're not in the John Dillinger days anymore,” Donald Foy, president of Maddads Jacksonville said. “If [the sheriff] feels technology is the best way to go, I think that we need to lean with him.”
The proposed budget comes as Jacksonville is on pace to have the most murders since 2008.
