Father charged for fatally shooting his son at a gun range in Lorton

Ajay Srivastav, 63, of Vienna, shot his son inside a car before shooting himself, Fairfax County Police said. Ajay is charged with aggravated malicious wounding.

LORTON, Va. — A 63-year-old father has been arrested and charged in the death of his 23-year-old son after a shooting on Nov. 11 at Sharpshooters Range in Lorton, according to Fairfax County Police. Varun Srivastav died from his injuries on Nov. 13, and following an autopsy, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said his death was ruled a homicide.

Police said the shooting happened in the parking lot of the range, located at 8194 Terminal Road, just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. When they arrived on scene, police said they discovered two men with gunshot wounds to their upper body. Both men were taken to the hospital.

After an investigation, police determined that Varun’s father, Ajay Srivastav, shot his son inside a car before shooting himself. Ajay was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being released, but Varun died at the hospital.

Ajay was released from the hospital before Varun's death, and is currently charged with aggravated malicious wounding and firearm use in the commission of a felony. However, police said they anticipate his charges will be changed to reflect Varun's death, and the medical examiner's ruling that the death was a homicide. This is the 13th homicide in Fairfax County in 2020, police said.

Ajay is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. Police continue to investigate the shooting.
