VERIFY: Will there be a Christmas tree at Beaches Town Center?

Posts on social media have people wondering, will there be a Christmas tree at the Beaches Town Center this year?

NEPTUNE/ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. - For years, families have flocked to the Christmas tree in the roundabout where Atlantic Boulevard meets the ocean. But posts on social media have people wondering, will there be a Christmas tree at the Beaches Town Center this year?

First Coast News set out to verify by talking to Jay Handline, president of the Beaches Town Center Agency. The Beaches Town Center Agency is responsible for maintenance, beautification and events at the Beaches Town Center.

“We think it’s gonna be even more impressive and more fun and more dynamic than we’ve ever done before,” Handline said.

Handline said the Christmas display will look different this year due to a landscaping project. The project has been in the works for three years cost $150,000, split among the agency, City of Atlantic Beach and City of Neptune Beach.

The focal point of the landscaping project is a three-trunked Sylvester palm tree located in the roundabout, the same spot where the Christmas tree stood.

Therefore, the palm tree will take the place of the Christmas tree and will be decorated as such.

“We’ll have ornaments that will be hanging from the tops of the palms and then all around the roundabout will be Christmas presents and gifts,” Handline said. “And then, of course, the Santa chair, which everybody loves.”

On Saturday, Dec. 1, there will be a temporary traditional Christmas tree in the roundabout for the annual holiday celebration. Additionally, there will be traditional Christmas trees outside Atlantic Beach City Hall and in Jarboe Park in Neptune Beach.

To address some of the rumors circulating online, First Coast News asked Handline whether there’s truth to rumors that the move was politically motivated or the result of atheist complaints.

“Absolutely none,” Handline said.

Both the palm tree and the temporary traditional tree will be lit on Dec. 1. Festivities including local dancers, singers, food and Santa Claus begin at 2:30 p.m.
