JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An ad attacking Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry’s record on crime says January 2019 was the deadliest January on record, but the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says that’s false.

Curry is running for re-election against city council member Anna Brosche.

The claim in the ad is taken from a News4Jax article titled, “Bloodiest January in Jacksonville in recent memory.”

The article says Jacksonville saw 17 homicides in January of 2019, more than any previous January. The article credits the information to News4Jax records but doesn't explain what that means.

Those records are inaccurate, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

January 2006 also had 17 homicides, and January 2007 had 18, according to JSO spokesperson Melissa Bujeda.

The ad paid for by A New Day PC also claims there have been more than 350 murders in Jacksonville under Curry’s watch. First Coast News verified that is true, according to crime statistics by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
