Two people were rescued from a vehicle that crashed into a creek in St. Augustine Wednesday after trying to flee deputies.

A deputy with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office located a vehicle in the area of U.S. 1 South and Old Moultrie Road that was reported out of Flagler County. Authorities there said the driver, a male suspect, was reported endangered.

When the deputy approached, the driver fled northbound on U.S. 1 at a high speed. The driver also had a passenger in the vehicle. The deputy backed off on the pursuit as the driver approached and turned onto Shore Drive. The deputy lost sight of the vehicle as it continued on Shore Drive.

Deputies say the driver then failed to negotiate at the 90-degree curve and continued southbound on the grass, through a small wooded area before going over the cliffs and into the creek.

The two were rescued and transported to Flagler Hospital.

Deputies say the male driver who was reportedly endangered was going to be Baker Acted for mental evaluation.

At this time, no other information was released.
