Parents of teen with cystic fibrosis prepare to say goodbye as health takes a turn for the worse

The parents of Chrissy Van Der Velden, 17, were overjoyed when she came out of a coma after battling cystic fibrosis. The teen's health has since taken a turn for the worse.

On Friday, First Coast News told viewers about one family’s Christmas miracle.

The parents of Chrissy Van Der Velden, 17, were overjoyed when she came out of a coma after battling cystic fibrosis. Sadly, on Thursday, Chrissy’s health took a turn for the worse.

She was placed on dialysis and her blood is full of bacteria. Doctors told her parents to prepare to say goodbye.

“We were told she isn’t going to make it through the night,” Chrissy’s father, William Van Der Velden said. “I’ve never imagined what it would be like to wake up and she’s not there.”

William said the last time he talked to his daughter, before her coma, she wanted to keep fighting for her life.

“I asked her before she went into incubation if she wanted to keep going and she was very weak, but she said yes.”

Chrissy's step-mother, Alaina said she’s been talking to her while she’s under sedation.

“I tell her that I’m really sorry for sweating the small stuff, stupid stuff that doesn’t even matter and that my only regret, is not having been her mother longer,” Alaina said.

The family said they will continue to update First Coast News on their daughter’s condition.
