Nursing home offers virtual 'adopt a grandparent' program

The virtual program allows English-speakers from around the world to volunteer spending time with “grandparents,” through video calls.

As more people are taking measures of social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak, many are finding themselves in isolation, especially the senior citizen community.

Health officials said it's extremely important that elderly residents stay home if at all possible, as people 65 and older are more likely to have critical symptoms of COVID-19.

A nursing home in the U.K. has found a creative solution for people who want to help the senior citizen community. CHD Living, which is based in London, has started an “Adopt a Grandparent” program.

The virtual program allows English-speakers from around the world to volunteer spending time with “grandparents,” through video calls.

“In an effort to fight against the COVID-19 crisis, we've taken our 'Adopt a Grandparent' campaign and added a digital twist! We're now looking for virtual volunteers to get on board and adopt one of our residents. We'll be using a range of technology to enable you to video call your partnered grandparent and keep them company in an effort to combat loneliness during these times,” the facility announced in an Instagram post.

According to the CHD Living website, the program helps "bring a sense of comfort to young people and the elderly who may not have grandparents/grandchildren of their own, with the aim of creating long-lasting intergenerational friendships."
