No weapon found after Mandarin High School briefly goes on Code Red lockdown

Mandarin H.S. principal said no weapon was found after the school briefly went on a Code Red lockdown Friday afternoon.

The Code Red lockdown has been lifted at Mandarin High School Friday after reports that a student had a gun on campus, according to Duval County Public Schools (DCPS).

The school was placed on lockdown around 1 p.m. DCPS said police detained the student but didn't find a firearm in his possession. This caused police to search the school.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said on Twitter it wasn't handling this incident.

The principal of the school said that no firearm was found and the lockdown was  lifted around 2:30 p.m. Police are continuing to investigate the incident and appropriate action will be taken.

DCPS said everyone in the school is safe. It also says dismissal times and after school activities will continue as usual.

The principal of Mandarin High School sent out the following message to parents regarding the incident:

Mandarin High families,

First, I want to share how incredibly thankful I am to you, to our students and to our staff for your patience during today’s incident.

I know it caused much fear and frustration, and I appreciate the support as we continue to take measures to ensure a safe learning environment.

I also want to provide information that we know at this time regarding today’s incident. We previously shared that the Code Red was caused by reports that a student was in possession of a firearm.

After a thorough search, no firearm was located. Police are continuing their investigation, and appropriate action will take place.

We want to applaud the students who first reported their concerns. “See something Say something” is one of our most effective ways of addressing safety, and their reports allowed us to take immediate action. Please continue to encourage your students to report their safety concerns. Please also remind students that bringing weapons, firearms and prohibited items on campus is not allowed and will result in serious consequences.

I appreciate your continued support in keeping Mandarin safe! Have a great weekend.
