Main Street Bridge opens following gate malfunction

A First Coast News reporter stuck in traffic says vehicles have been backing up since 10 a.m. The Acosta Bridge is a good an alternate route.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Main Street Bridge is now open after a gate malfunction closed it in both directions around 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Hampton Ray, a representative with Florida Department of Transportation, told First Coast News that the issue had to do with "a lot of moving parts on the bridge."

"We've got to make sure everything is right before we let traffic back onto the bridge, obviously," he said.

The lanes reopened at 11:45 a.m. but there may be residual traffic in the area.

Drivers headed downtown should use the Acosta Bridge as a traffic detour.
