20-foot hole in St. Augustine Thursday caused by pipe bursting

According to the St. Augustine Police Department, San Marco Avenue was shut down for several hours in between May and Dismuke Street due to the presence of the hole.

A 20-foot wide hole opened up on San Marco Ave. near May St. in St. Augustine on Thursday, shutting down the road and adjacent library.

According to the St. Augustine Police Department, San Marco Avenue was shut down for several hours in between May and Dismuke Street due to the presence of the hole.

St. Augustine public works say the hole was caused by a hundred-year-old iron pipe that burst due to temperature changes.

A truck did get stuck in the hole for a brief period, was but able to be towed out. The driver was not injured.

Once the truck was towed out, crews pumped water out of the hole and removed the old pipe.

Public works say that nearly all the old pipes on San Marco have been replaced, except for this one.

They couldn't replace this piece because of ongoing construction on San Marco and May street but say they plan to overhaul all the old pipes once that construction has finished.
