A Jacksonville teen died Saturday afternoon after a long battle with cystic fibrosis, her parents said.
Chrissy Van Der Velden, 17, died at 4:45 p.m., according to her father, William Van Der Velden.
"Christina Van Der Velden gained her beautiful wings," her father said in a post to the family's GoFundMe page. "Fly High Baby Girl! Gone but will definitely never be forgotten."
Chrissy died just days after coming out of a two-week coma brought on by her condition. Her parents were overjoyed when she finally came out of the coma and believed her condition was improving.
But Chrissy's health took a turn for the worse Thursday and she was placed on dialysis with her blood full of bacteria.
“I’ve never imagined what it would be like to wake up and she’s not there,” Chrissy's father, William Van Der Velden told First Coast News.
Chrissy's family said they still need help with hospital bills. If you would like to help Chrissy’s family, click here.
