Repeat DUI offender hits, kills young couple on motorcycle, according to police

They were each other's soulmates.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A young couple in love was hit and killed by a repeat DUI offender over the weekend.

Kerry Webb, who went by the name "Jason," and Angelina Torrey, who went by "Angel," both lost their lives in Tampa last Saturday night.

Torrey, just 25 years old, is from Jacksonville. Her older sister Dominique Williams says she can't believe what happened and is especially appalled by the circumstances.

The suspect, 34-year-old Benson Craig Johnston, has a long criminal record, including two previous DUI convictions, according to police records.

Last Saturday, a report from Florida Highway Patrol shows that his third DUI took two innocent lives.

"She was a really good girl, she overcame a lot of obstacles in her life and childhood," Williams said.

She is heartbroken over his little sister. She said she had just finished up college and received her degree. She wanted to share her sister’s memory for all of her friends around Jacksonville in case they hadn't heard the horrible news yet.

"The girl had her life all in front of her and it was taken away in an instant because somebody drank and drove and came out in front of them, you know, she’s going to be missed," Williams said.

On April 14, around 9:30 p.m., Torrey jumped on her boyfriend’s motorcycle but their trip together was cut short when Johnston turned into their path with his Lexus SUV and collided with their motorcycle.

"They were hit head on," Williams said. "They were both ejected from the motorcycle."

Webb died at the scene. Torrey was taken to the hospital, but didn't survive either.

Officials say Johnston tried to leave his car and run from the scene but he was later captured nearby and arrested. His criminal history is extensive, with arrests dating back nearly two decades:

2002 – drug paraphernalia

2003 – illegal license plate tag

2004 – drug paraphernalia

2004 – drug paraphernalia & alcohol

2005 -- DUI

2013 -- DUI

2016 – domestic violence

2016 – domestic violence

2017 – domestic violence

2017 – disorderly conduct, drug paraphernalia

2018 – DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash, disorderly conduct, possession of controlled substances

He is now being held without bond in the Hillsborough County jail.

Williams says Webb posted that her little sister was the love of his life.

"I just feel awful for his family and all the families impacted by this," Williams said.

She hopes this serves as a reminder of the lethal combination of drinking and driving.

"I hope this creates awareness I hope we get justice, I hope this guy gets what he deserves at the end of the day," she said.

First Coast News reached out to Florida Highway Patrol to ask why Johnston was on the road after his arrest history, they haven't responded yet. However, FHP did indicate that Johnston's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit when he was arrested and that both Webb and Torrey were wearing helmets when they were struck.

This weekend the families will celebrate the lives of Webb and Torrey, partially in Tampa and partially back on the First Coast. They just asks for the community’s thoughts during this time.
