Flagler County's Inmate Work Crew is saving taxpayers $75,000 a year, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office announced on Thursday.

Its Inmate Work Crew was launched last year. It consists of inmates who are classified as non-violent and low-risk inmates.

The inmates provide services like landscaping and grounds keeping to various Flagler locations. They also complete other tasks like filling sandbags like they did for Hurricane Irma.

"The taxpayer savings from not having to pay for outsourcing these services speak for themselves," Sheriff Rick Staly said in a statement. "There is absolutely no downside to having the Inmate Work Crew, we are saving tax dollars and providing much needed work experience for the inmates where they learn how to use landscaping equipment."

The inmates are also supervised by a trained Detention Deputy at no additional cost to the taxpayers.
