FDOT knew for weeks about potential massive hole on Beach Boulevard

FDOT said taxpayers won't be held responsible for the repair of the massive hole that formed last week.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced Monday that it was aware about the potential of a massive hole forming on Beach Boulevard near Hodges Road weeks before it happened last week.

FDOT's public information officer, Hampton Ray said that FDOT received notification of a depression forming on Beach Boulevard near Falcon Ridge on April 23. After, FDOT responded and had its maintenance contractor review the area.

Ray said the maintenance contractor inspected the area and filled the depression with soil.

Ray said taxpayers won't be held responsible for the repair of the massive hole that formed last week. Instead, he said the maintenance contractor will be responsible.

He said the maintenance contractor is the one who is responsible for maintaining that portion of the roadway, including the segment of drainage pipe that collapsed on May 16.

Ray also said the drainage pipe collapsed because of the recent high rainfall. He said FDOT will also assess the conditions of other drainage pipes in the area.
