JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The family of Jayden Piedra says he was visiting a friend at the Morningside Apartments when he got hold of a gun and accidentally shot himself.

A godparent of 2-year-old Piedra told First Coast News that Piedra’s mother is taking this hard and cannot fathom having to plan a funeral for her toddler.

A GoFundMe page for Jayden Piedra says the boy was with his mother and older brother when they were visiting a friend. The page says Jayden’s mother is a single parent working to take care of her kids, and she has lost a part of herself.

JSO says the shooting occurred inside a unit at the Morningside Apartments around 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

A family member tells First Coast News that Piedra’s mother was sleeping in another room when the gun went off.

Police are investigating who owned the handgun.

Meanwhile, the family says Piedra’s mom doesn’t know who to turn to or what to do in this difficult time.
