Family displaced from Hurricane Irma reportedly robbed of salvaged belongings

One St. Johns family lost almost everything during hurricane Irma and has again been hit by another bad break.

They say when it rains, it floods.

It rained hard for Susan Qualls when the waters of hurricane Irma hit her home in Hastings.

"We'd never been through anything like this," Qualls said.

Qualls' family had just moved to this house from Virginia the year before. Qualls said Irma destroyed almost everything they had.

"[A] FEMA inspector condemned it because of the black mold," Qualls said.

They'd been weathering the storm, though.

"We went to the Quality Inn on 207 and stayed there for six months," Qualls said.

Her 16 and 17-year-old kids Seth and Tori both got jobs, and like clockwork they checked on the house.

"At least three to four times a week, because what little stuff we could save we stored in there because we had no room at the hotel," Qualls said.

Two weeks ago they were finally able to get into another house, and then came that metaphorical flood.

"We came the Sunday after we had moved and everything was gone," Qualls said.

Qualls said someone broke in through the back door and robbed them. A police report lists a flat screen TV, a self-propelled lawn mower, a yellow and black full face helmet, a blue and silver full face helmet, a multicolored dragon head full face helmet, a red skull half shell helmet, a Sons of Anarchy full movie set, a red and white Honda CR125 dirt bike, a black and blue kids horse saddle, a woman's brown and tan with flowers horse saddle, and an old brown saddle as missing.

"They went through everything," Qualls said. "The closets, everything."

Seth is 16-years-old and works two jobs. He says the dirt bike was his escape.

"These kids have already been through enough," Qualls said. "It's not easy living in a hotel, they both work since the hurricane, its been a long hard road getting here."

Qualls says she's not asking for a dime, she just wants their stuff back.

"They don't deserve this, we came here for a fresh start," Qualls said, "so it wasn't right. They need to bring it back."

Qualls is asking anyone who may know what happened to their belongings to come forward. She says the family is still making payments on the lawn mower.
