The officer who died in a single-vehicle accident on Tuesday will have a motorcycle escort by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office from the Medical Examiner's Office to a funeral home on Thursday.

Officer Lance C. Whitaker, 48, was responding to a call about a separate traffic crash near I-295 and Alta Drive around 4:30 a.m. when he reportedly crashed into a tree. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

JSO will line the route with police cars with their lights on to show their respect at 11 a.m., according to a press release. JFRD will also have fire engines posted along the route.

The route will be on Jefferson Street from 8th Street all the way down the ramp to Riverside Avenue. It will take a right on Edison Avenue, left on Oak Street and back into the Hardage-Giddens funeral home located in the 500 block of Park Street where Whitaker will be prepped for his funeral services.

The date and time of Whitaker's funeral services haven't been announced.

JSO will line the route with police cars with their lights on to show their respect for Officer Lance Whitaker at 11 a.m.as he makes his way from the Medical Examiner's Office to a funeral home.

The public is welcome to line the streets and pay their respect to Whitaker, but JSO asks that they do so on Riverside Avenue from Jackson Street all the way to Forest Street because it's safer; both sides of the street have sidewalks.
