The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released the names Saturday of the suspect and officer involved in a shooting that took place on Melson Avenue in the Paxon area of Jacksonville on Friday.
The suspect has been identified as Tyrone Maurice Buckman, 30, and the officer has been identified as Officer J. A. Ledyard who has been with JSO since August of 2015.
On Friday shortly after 4 p.m., JSO said police identified a traffic violator in a 2018 black Nissan Altima who would not cooperate with a police order to pull over.
Police say they then saw Buckman, holding a handgun, leave the vehicle and flee on foot to an abandoned home.
Two other people, described as two black men, in the car fled in a different direction on foot.
Ledyard caught up to Buckman at the abandoned home and fired four shots at the suspect. Buckman was struck in the lower torso and was hospitalized. He is in stable condition. No officers were injured during the shooting.
It remains unknown what prompted Ledyard to shoot.
Buckman has 12 prior adult arrests, according to JSO, including burglary, sexual battery and introducing contraband into a detention facility. Buckman is facing prison time because, as a convicted felon, he is prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.
Ledyard has been placed on administrative leave as per protocol, according to JSO. JSO says this is Ledyard's first officer-involved shooting.
JSO and the State Attorney's Office continue to investigate the incident that occurred a few blocks from Paxon High, Paxon School for Advanced Studies and James Weldon Johnson Middle School. Lendvay said no students were present in the vicinity of the chase.
JSO says body camera footage worn by three of the officers at the scene is being reviewed.
Police actively searched for but were unable to locate the driver and passenger who fled the car on foot. Other than traffic violations, Lendvay said they are not wanted for a crime but for questioning.
The Nissan has been impounded and JSO says they are developing leads on the two individuals.
