2019 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday: Here are the items that qualify

Beginning on Friday, qualifying items related to disaster preparedness will be exempt from sales tax.

Beginning on Friday, qualifying items related to disaster preparedness will be exempt from sales tax as part of the 2019 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.

Rick Scott visited Jacksonville on Thursday ahead of the tax-holiday to remind Floridians that it's important to get prepared for Hurricane Season early and to stock up on supplies while you can.

NOAA predicts a range of nine to 15 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), with four to eight potentially becoming hurricanes (74 mph or higher).

Some qualifying items for the tax-free holiday include:

  • Flashlights
  • Lanterns
  • Ice packs
  • Batteries
  • Generators 
  • Tarps
  • Reusable ice (reusable ice packs)
  • Bungee cords 
  • Radios (powered by battery, solar, or handcrank) 
  • Weather band 
  • Any gas or diesel fuel container, including LP gas and kerosene containers
  • Ratchet straps
  • Any portable self-powered light source such as candles, flashlights and lanterns

Tax exemption does not apply to any rentals or repairs along with the sale of any items in theme parks, entertainment complexes or hotels. The sales tax holiday also does not apply to the rental or repair of any of the qualifying items.

The tax-free holiday lasts until Thursday, June 6.
