Kids start lemonade stand for those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas

Kids in a neighborhood in Palm Valley are doing what they can to help those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.

Kids in a neighborhood in Palm Valley set up a lemonade stand Saturday evening with all of the proceeds going to help those in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian.

According to Mardee Allcorn, whose son had the idea for the stand, several of the neighbors go to the islands and have been for years. She said they became friends with a few Bahamian families, families who now have lost everything.

“They become part of your family. Even if you’re on vacation every few years or every summer," Allcorn said. "They’re the nicest sweetest people."

The money they raise will go directly to the families they became friends with to help them rebuild their homes and businesses. The neighbors said they wanted to do whatever they could to help those who've become like family.

“Our school last year had a whole unit on philanthropy, and I just thought it’d be a good idea to have a lemonade stand to help out those families in the Bahamas," Allcorn's son Jake said.

One of the neighbors and her family collected donations from the community and took their boat to the islands Sunday to deliver supplies. She said that after seeing the devastation firsthand, no act is too small to help.

“It’s pretty important [to help]," Lindy White said. "They still need supplies. There’s never too much supplies for them."

The neighbors sold treats along with the lemonade. As of Saturday night, they raised $100.
