JACKSONVILLE — JTA will start offering an on-demand service in December, similar to a taxi service.
ReadiRide is an alternative service that will also replace the community shuttles offered by JTA in some areas.
JTA is offering the service for people like Linda Gonzalves, who likes to take advantage of different types of transportation.
“I don’t like going over bridges, so I’ll take the bus. I want to get to the airport and don’t want to leave my car there, or if the bus is inconvenient I’ll take Uber. It depends on the situation,” Gonzalves said.
She can add a fourth transportation choice to her list with ReadiRide.
Customers can call a number and get picked up by an Owl, Inc. shuttle and get a ride from their home or business to any location.
Trips cost $2 per person or 50 cents per person if one is going to a bus stop.
People can take a one-way or round-trip to any location within the zone they live in. The zones where ReadiRide will be offered are Highlands, the Northside, the Beaches, the Southwest and Southeast zones.
JTA says they are trying to keep up with customers' changing demands for transportation.
"It's all about being mobility integrators and offering customers choices, choices they can control,” JTA media relations manager Leigh Ann Rassler said.
“They don’t have to wait for a community shuttle to deviate from its route …The customer is in control of what they want to do, where they want to do it and for a lot less money," Rassler added.
People like Gonzalves can’t wait to take advantage of the cash-only service.
"I think it's a great idea,” Gonzalves said.
ReadiRide will be offered in the five different zones Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Customers can call Owl, Inc. at 904-679-4555 to reserve a ride. Rides can be reserved up to two weeks in advance of a trip.
