JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An industrial mishap is being blamed for a semi trailer explosion outside a Grand Park business Thursday night that authorities say could be heard two miles away.
The trailer, filled with a variety of metals, exploded outside AAA Cooper Transportation on Flag Street, blowing parts off the roof off the business and damaging its exterior, according to police.
No one was hurt in the blast because the building was empty when the trailer exploded about 9 p.m., Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesperson Melissa Bujeda said at a news briefing.
Firefighters and hazmat teams were initially dispatched to the scene after the explosion was reported. Later, the Sheriff's Office, FBI, State Fire Marshal's Office and Department of Transportation were called in to investigate, Bujeda told reporters.
Investigators at some point located a second trailer carrying a similar load of metals somewhere else in the area, Bujeda said, but that one did not appear to be a hazard.
