Jacksonville woman's burial plans disrupted by funeral home closing

Jacksonville funeral home closes its doors abruptly. Refunds were made but at least one customer complains she did not get a full refund. She also states the closing snatched her peace and security. Now she is looking for answers from the On Your Side team.

Martha Watson, 79, decided her final resting place would be in Jacksonville's Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.

"I have the lot and I have the vault at Chapel Hills," she said.

This summer, her well-laid plans went into a tailspin after her funeral home closed its doors.

"I thought everything was taken care of and I didn't want my children to bother with any of it," Watson said.

Watson came to Grinders American Diner on Monday to an I'm Telling Ken session.

She appeared reluctant because of the television cameras but she had questions and she wanted answers.

"I am starting all over again and I don't know what to do," she said. "It has been very stressful."

Watson said the peace and security she had was lost when her funeral home closed its doors.

"I hated it because I had everything picked out," she said.

The Lampkins Patterson funeral home closed because of a failed business relationship between the two principals.

Even so, Watson was reimbursed $2,800 of her pre-need funeral package, but she told us she has yet to receive the $700 she paid for a headstone.

"I don't have it," she said. "And he stopped returning my calls."

Another concern is her casket. It was already purchased and delivered to the Lampkins Patterson location.

She doesn't want to move it again and said she doesn't know what to do with it.

"It's in the building, I fluffed the pillow,' she said.

On Your Side began investigating her concerns. We could find no complaint history on the business and it looks like her complaint is merely the result of bad communication.

"It wasn't my fault," she said.

Renaldo Lampkins, the licensed funeral director, and former partner in the funeral home said it was his fault.

"Truly it is my fault because this should have been taken care of," Lampkins said. "It will be taken care of today."

Ex-partner Darryl Patterson described the split as a divorce, but he said the business will reopen shortly.

"The funeral home is changing ownership and will reopen by the end of the month," Patterson said. "Any prior arrangements made with Ms. Watson will be honored."

Watson, who is still trying to finalize her burial plans, said she will consider the offer from Patterson.

"I really was happy with the funeral home," Watson said.

UPDATE: The funeral home is reimbursing Watson the value of her hedge stone and giving her $2,800, the value of the casket, which wasn't part of their deal.
