Jacksonville International Airport prepares extra parking for Thanksgiving travelers

Millions across the country are hitting the roads and taking to the skies for the holiday weekend. So how is the Jacksonville International Airport dealing with the crowds?

JACKSONVILLE — Millions across the country are hitting the roads and taking to the skies for the holiday weekend, so how is the Jacksonville International Airport dealing with the crowds?

The airport has opened an extra economy parking lot to deal with the crowds for the holiday.

On Your Side’s Troy Kless timed out how long it takes to find a parking spot and get to the terminal. For the demonstration, Kless arrived at the airport for a 2:00 pm flight to Charlotte.

On Tuesday afternoon, every parking garage and economy lot had open spaces.

Travelers like Lisa Whitehead say they are taking advantage of the economy parking deal for the holiday.

“Five dollars a day is pretty good and when you pull in it tells you if it’s open,” Whitehead said. It did not take long to find a spot in the economy lot. Within 15 minutes, Troy Kless made it to the terminal.

Whitehead says she also had an easy travel day before her flight to Atlanta for Thanksgiving.

“Today was easy. I came from the Westside, so it took about 30 minutes of travel time to find a spot to getting on the bus and being dropped off at the front,” Whitehead said.

The Jacksonville International Airport says that travelers can pre-pay $20 to park in the third economy lot from Tuesday, November 20 to Wednesday, November 28.

Other parking options include Economy Lots 1 and 2 ($5 per day), daily surface lot ($9 per day), daily garage ($15.00 per day) or the hourly garage ($2 per day), according to the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.

JAA encourages travelers to arrive to the airport two hours before your flight. JAA also recommends people use the hourly garages if they are picking up family or friends.
