Mayor Curry's travel practices shrouded in secrecy

A new investigation by the Florida Times-Union into travel practices by Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry revealed that at least some of his travel is financed by his political action committee, Build Something That Lasts.

That practice is of interest because one of the biggest donors to Curry’s PAC is Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan. The PAC has paid for travel on Khan’s private jet, even as the city is in negotiations with Khan’s company Iguana Investments over development of the Shipyards property in downtown Jacksonville – a project expected to be sweetened with significant city buy-in, possibly in the form of tax rebates, development incentives and the relocation of a major city thoroughfare.

There is nothing illegal about the arrangement. Although gifts to the mayor from anyone lobbying or doing business with the city must be disclosed, there is no similar requirement of disclosure for donations to a political action committee used by the mayor.

The mayor declined to be interviewed by the Times-Union for its story. First Coast News has also requested an interview from the mayor.

Times-Union reporter Nate Monroe sat down with First Coast News’ Anne Schindler to discuss how he got the story, and why it matters.
