UNF steps up fight against cancer with special microscope

A unique state-of-the-art tool used to fight cancer now lives at the University of North Florida.

During the past few weeks, university researchers have been using what's called a "Tescan Q Phase Microscope.

It's the only one in North America and is used to study live cells including various types of cancer cells. The unique microscope allows researchers to record images of cancer cells while they are still alive.

"This microscope allows us to really see how single cells even in clumps of different cells are able to divide or migrate and respond to treatments that we give them which are ways we try to kill brain cancer cells," Dr. Maarteen Rotman said. Rotman is a research fellow at Mayo.

The microscope can be used to study all types of cancer and right now researchers are focused on the most aggressive forms of brain and breast cancer.
