Memorial Hospital: First virtual pharmacy kiosk in NE FL

Memorial Hospital Jacksonville is unveiling a new virtual pharmacy that will be one of the first of it's kind.

The MedAvail kiosk will be able to dispense medication is eight minutes and is the only the second of its kind in the state of Florida. It's also one of only 21 throughout the United States and Canada.

The MedAvail kiosk will allow people to pick up their prescription medications without needing to travel to a pharmacy. Additionally, if needed, any questions about prescription medications are answered immediately by a “live” pharmacist through a one-on-one consultation using the kiosk’s videoconference capability.

“Memorial Hospital is very forward-thinking and our MedAvail kiosk enhances patient experience by providing them with on-the-go prescriptions filled before they leave the hospital,” said Mary Reval, DNP, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Memorial Hospital Jacksonville. “MedAvail eliminates the additional time a patient has to spend traveling to a pharmacy.”

The MedAvail kiosk offers more than 150 prescription strength medications. It offers customizable medications by the pharmacist to match specifically requested prescriptions.

The kiosk also stocks up on seasonal medications in anticipation of heavy requests made during specific times of the year. For example, during flu season, the kiosk is stocked with relevant flu medication to cater for that specific higher demand.

“It is truly a convenient and quick way to help patients and reduce their stress during an already stressful time for them,” said Reval.

The MedAvail kiosk is located in Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room lobby and is also open to the public only with a valid prescription from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

No controlled substances or opioids will be offered at the kiosk.
