14-year-old boy charged after gun found at Highlands Middle School last week

According to the police report, one of the students told police that the 14-year-old boy told him that he was bringing the gun to school and that he had placed the gun near the bleachers in the past as well.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has arrested another child after a firearm was discovered on the campus of Highlands Middle School last week.

A 14 -year old boy has been charged with dealing in stolen property, possession of a firearm on school property, and possession of a firearm by a minor, according to an arrest report by JSO.

 Police say that a P.E teacher noticed two boys on the bleachers outside of the school who were not authorized to be there. As the teacher approached them, the boys ran away and of them placed an object by the base of a stadium light pole.

Upon further inspection, the teacher noticed that the object was a gun.

Authorities were called and the school was placed on a code yellow lockdown while a search for the students commenced. Both students were located in their classrooms.

According to the police report, one of the students told police that the 14-year-old boy told him that he was bringing the gun to school and that he had placed the gun near the bleachers in the past as well.

The 14-year-old student was taken into custody and arrested. A subsequent investigation determined that the handgun was reported stolen to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office.

11 weapons and three firearms have been found on campuses in Duval County this school year, 2018-19.

The three firearms refer to firearms incidents that were investigated by  school police:

  •         A. Philip Randolph – 2/12/19
  •         Highlands Middle School – 2/27/19
