Duval County Public Schools aces national assessment, ranks top in math

Duval County Public Schools has come out on top in several categories in the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

Duval County ranked number one nationally in:

  • 4th grade math for all students
  • African American students in 4th grade math
  • African American Students in 8th grade reading
  • Students with disabilities in 4th grade math
  • Students with disabilities in 8th grade math

The assessment to come to these decisions is voluntary and done by the Trial Urban District Assessment program within the NAEP. The assessment lets large districts to be scored separately from their states which allows for comparisons against the nation's largest participating cities. A total of 27 districts participate in the program.

Additionally, Duval ranked number two in the nation for the following:

  • African American students in 4th grade reading
  • African American students in 8th grade math
  • Hispanic students in 4th grade math
  • Hispanic students in 4th grade reading
  • Free and Reduced Lunch students in 4th grade math
  • Free and Reduced lunch students in 4th grade reading
  • Students with Disabilities in 4th grade reading
  • Students with Disabilities in 8th grade reading

Duval ranked third in the nation for:

  • All students 4th grade reading
  • All students in 8th grade reading
  • Hispanic students in 8th grade math (tied)
  • Free and Reduced Lunch students in 8th grade reading

“If this were the Olympics, you would say we medaled in almost every event,” said Superintendent Dr. Patricia Willis. “These results, in addition to our record-high graduation rate, reflect the incredible efforts of our students, our teachers, the district and our community.”

“We are definitely on the rise,” Superintendent Willis said. “Being an urban district ahead of the national average for all public schools reflects very strongly the way our schools have improved the instructional experience for students. Excellence is our goal, and our schools are moving in that direction.”
