WAYCROSS, Ga. — A correctional officer in Waycross has been charged with having sex with an inmate and a nurse has been charged with acting as a "lookout" during the encounter on Tuesday.
According to the indictment, an employee at the D. Ray James Correctional Institution in Folkston Ga. saw correctional officer Rebecca Fussell, 48, have sex with a male inmate in a medical treatment room at the prison.
The indictment said the employee's accusation led investigators to believe that a prison nurse, Melissa Batten, 47, facilitated the encounter and helped cover up repeated sexual encounters between the inmate and Fussell.
Federal law states that any sexual activity between an inmate and prison employee is classified as sexual abuse of a person in custody and carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
Fussell has been charged with conspiracy and sexual abuse of a ward. Batten has been charged with conspiracy and false statement.
