A serial killer sentenced to death for a Jacksonville Beach murder in 1994 will be executed this year.
Gary Ray Bowles, 57, will be executed August 22, 2019 at 6 p.m., carrying out a sentence for a Jacksonville Beach murder he was found guilty for in 1994.
The state says Bowles murdered Jacksonville Beach resident Walter Hinton in November of 1994. Bowles reportedly agreed to help Hinton move some personal items from Georgia to his mobile home in Jacksonville. In exchange, the State says Hinton allowed Bowles to live with him.
While Hinton slept, Bowles reportedly dropped a concrete block on Hinton's head, then strangled him when he woke up.
After being arrested, Bowles confessed to murdering Hinton and admitted to five additional murders across Florida, Georgia, and Maryland.
The State said evidence gathered by police suggest Bowles possessed a hatred of homosexuals and targetted homosexual men.
Bowles will be executed in Starke, Florida.
