Security to be reviewed after shooting at Terry Parker High School

Superintendent Diana Greene says she felt both empathy and frustration over an act of violence at a football game.

The Duval County Public Schools superintendent says they are considering an evaluation of school security after a student was shot outside of a spring football game at Terry Parker High School.

Superintendent Diana Greene says she felt both empathy and frustration over an act of violence at a football game.

“First, I want to convey my sympathy to the family," Greene said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man. And, yes, it is frustrating because I care for each and every one of our students."

DCPS police say as the game was winding down, their officers were still inside the stadium preparing to escort spectators out.

That’s when the shooting happened—outside of the stadium gates.

“He had not made entrance yet, those individuals had not went through the wanding process, where we search individuals to make sure they don’t have firearms on them,” DCPS Police Department’s Micheal Edwards said.

Those are one of the few added measures put in place after a triple shooting at Raines High School in August 2018 killed one teen and injured two others.

DCPS says they made dramatic changes after that game, including better lighting on school grounds.

They also say security was the same level as a regular season game.

A regular season which may see more security changes.

“We’ll have the summer to review our practices and procedures and make that determination as we move through the summer months,” Greene said.
