A car thief is reportedly in Duval County Sunday evening after St. Johns County deputies said he stole a vehicle from a used car lot in St. Augustine, caused a crash, then drove 100 mph on the wrong side of Interstate-95, and later stole a car from a person getting gas.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said they got a call around 5 p.m. regarding a man stealing a drink and some food from a St. Augustine Walmart.

By the time deputies arrived at the scene, the man had already left.

Later, deputies received a call about a car being stolen from a used car lot. Upon checking surveillance video at the lot, a deputy recognized the man.

Deputies said calls soon began coming in about a reckless driver in the stolen vehicle. The driver then crashed on US-1 near International Golf Parkway, according to the sheriff's office. While deputies worked the scene, the car thief then got on I-95 at International Golf Parkway and drove north in the southbound lane at around 100 mph, deputies said.

The sheriff's office said they were able to have eyes on him, but did not chase him since he was driving the wrong way. After getting off at County Road-210, the driver reportedly stole another car at a Gate gas station on State Road-13 and Race Track Road. Deputies said he stole a silver Chevy Cruze after telling the victim to exit the vehicle.

Deputies said he then drove into Jacksonville, where he could still be on the run.

Multiple agencies are involved in the case, including the St. Augustine Police Department and St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

No further suspect information has been released.
