A 51-year-old Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office public records coordinator has been arrested on child neglect charges after a girl said repeated requests for her to stop her husband from masturbating in front of her were never acted on, according to the arrest warrant.

Carlene Lea Grandison’s arrest comes only a few days after her husband was jailed on multiple lewd conduct and molestation charges on a child, the victim saying multiple attempts to get her to stop him failed, arrest warrants said.

Grandison was arrested May 7, and remains behind bars on $200,000 bail, Duval County jail records state. The Sheriff’s Office said she has resigned her position with it.

Her 53-year-old husband, Darryl Van Grandison, was arrested April 24 on charges of sexual battery, plus lewd and lascivious conduct, exhibition and molestation against someone under 16, jail records show. He was also charged May 4 with child abuse, and he remains behind bars on $225,000 bail, jail records state.

The investigation began April 24 when officers went to the Grandisons’ home after a report of a lewd act on a child, the father’s first arrest report said. There, the victim said the suspect had been molesting her since she was 12 when the family lived in Albuquerque, N.M., the report said.

The victim said the suspect would play with himself next to her on a sofa in Albuquerque in 2016, the warrant said. Police investigated, but the victim said she was pulled aside by someone whose name has been redacted and told “not to say another word because they would deal with it,” the Jacksonville arrest warrant said. The Albuquerque case was closed when family members ceased responding to investigators’ phone calls, and child protective services were never notified, the warrant said.

The family moved to Jacksonville in 2017, and the victim said the suspect often walked into the bathroom while she was there, the warrant said. He would also stand naked across from her bedroom and masturbate, sometimes shining a flashlight on himself, the warrant said.

The victim told investigators that she was afraid of the suspect and forced to dress behind her bedroom door or in her closet so he would not see her naked, the warrant said.

The victim said she repeatedly told someone whose name was redacted on the warrant about the incidents and was told: “I will talk to him.” And when the victim told someone last June that the suspect was still masturbating in front of her and going through her underwear, she was allowed to move out, the warrant said.
