Child shot in the head, critically injured at North Jacksonville home

Police say two children got hold of the gun and it went off, striking a child in the head.

The child who was critically injured Monday after two children got hold of a gun inside a North Jacksonville home was shot in the head, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO said around 4 p.m., officers responded to UF Health at 655 W. 8th St. in reference to a shooting. Medical staff told officers that the child victim was shot in the head.

Upon investigating, JSO learned that one of the residents left their home on Alexandra Drive around 2:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. to rent a carpet cleaner. About 10 minutes later, she received a call to return home because a child was "badly injured," according to the report.

When she returned, she saw that the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department was on the scene. Fire crews transported the injured child to the emergency room with critical injuries.

JSO later revealed that two children got a hold of a gun inside the home and it went off, striking a child in the head.

Some neighbors told First Coast News they believe at least three additional children live inside, boys and girls, including an infant.

First Coast News reached out to the Department of Family Services that contracts with the Family Support Services of Northeast Florida. They said they can not release information under Florida statute.

The department said if children were at home at the time and foster children, they would still be under the jurisdiction of the state as the investigation continues.
